Electric vehicle adoption is accelerating across the St. Louis metro, and the expectation that commercial properties will offer charging access is growing with it. For office building owners, retail center operators, and facility managers, EV charging has moved from a differentiator to an increasingly standard expectation. Installing the right infrastructure now positions a property well, but doing it without a proper electrical assessment first leads to expensive surprises.

Start with a Load Assessment
The productive starting point is not deciding how many charging stations you want. It is understanding what your existing electrical service can actually support. A building’s available capacity determines how many Level 2 charging circuits can be added without requiring a service upgrade. In some buildings, available capacity supports several stations with minimal infrastructure work. In others, adding even a few chargers may require a panel upgrade or new subpanel, which significantly changes project cost. AMF Electrical conducts load assessments before any EV charging design work begins.

Level 2 Is the Right Standard for Most Commercial Applications
Level 2 charging uses a 240-volt, 40-amp dedicated circuit and delivers approximately 25 miles of range per hour, enough for a meaningful charge during a typical workday or shopping trip. DC fast charging is appropriate for high-traffic travel corridors but is overkill and significantly more expensive for most commercial parking situations. Most St. Louis commercial properties are best served by a well-designed Level 2 installation sized to anticipated simultaneous users.

Load Management and Future Scalability
Load management software monitors total building electrical load in real time and distributes available charging capacity dynamically across multiple stations. This allows a property to install more chargers than raw electrical capacity would otherwise support by preventing all stations from drawing full power simultaneously. It also creates a platform for scaling the number of stations as demand grows without requiring additional infrastructure upgrades each time.

AMF Electrical installs commercial EV charging systems for offices, retail properties, restaurants, and industrial facilities throughout the St. Louis area.
